Bayeux Tapestry 'going on display in UK' for first time

The British Museum is the favourite to host the tapestry but other contenders are vying for the right to accommodate the 68m-long artefact

The Bayeux tapestry, which dates from around 1077, depicts the Battle of Hastings in 1066 when William the Conqueror from France defeated English forces at the Battle of Hastings.

However, it could be as long as five years before the tapestry arrives in Britain, as the loan is "subject to the outcome of tests to ensure that it is safe to move the 11th Century artwork", the BBC says.

Now on show at the Bayeux Museum, the artwork has only twice been displayed outside the region - once when Napoleon ordered the tapestry to be exhibited in Paris as he plotted to invade England, and again in 1944, when then Gestapo took it to the Louvre during the Nazi occupation of France.

Macron approved the transfer of the tapestry ahead of a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May, according to The Times, which added that it may not actually go on display until 2023.

The Tapestry is 230ft long and 1.6 feet high, made from panels of linen cloth stitched together.

The earliest written reference to it is an inventory from Bayeux Cathedral in 1476, but little is known about how or why it was created.

In 2012, said the artwork's needlework was "consistent throughout", suggesting one group of specialist embroiderers worked on it, in the same place at the same time.

The Norman conquest transformed England's language, laws, customs and architecture, and Queen Elizabeth is the 40th monarch in a royal line that traces its origin back to William the Conqueror.

On 14 October 1066, William I and King Harold II came to loggerheads after William claimed the former king, his distant cousin King Edward, had promised him the throne of England.

The tapestry has left Normandy twice, both times for Paris - once in 1804 and again, briefly, for the Louvre in 1944.

The embroidery has rarely been moved even within France and previous attempts to bring it to Britain have failed.

What are the myths and legends of the tapestry?

It includes a depiction of the old king, Harold II, who took an arrow to the eye during the battle and died.
