Bautista Agut beats Del Potro to win ASB Classic

ATP Auckland Roberto Bautista Agut claims the title after upsetting Juan Martin del Potro

Waiting for Del Potro in the last four will be Spaniard Ferrer, who brushed aside ATP NextGen Finals champion Chung Hyeon of South Korea 6-3 6-2.

Del Potro, who himself is a former champion here, winning the title in 2009 was happy with his game and congratulated the victor.

"I gave everything I have on the court this week", said the 29-year-old Bautista Agut, who won his first Auckland title two years ago.

Bautista Agut of Spain beat the second seed Del Potro 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 and shone once more in New Zealand ahead of the Australian Open, starting January 15.

"I played well and I'm looking forward to doing well in Melbourne".

The 18-year-old Canadian is now 0-2 to start the year after dropping his opening match of 2018 on January 2 at the Brisbane International to Britain's Kyle Edmund in three sets.

Roberto Bautista Agut is not your typical Spaniard.

Bautista Agut, the world No.21 and first-round vanquisher of Kiwi Michael Venus, will go on to face either Robin Haase or Peter Gojowczyk in the semis, and a potential final against Argentinian star Juan Martin del Potro. "I did too. It's never easy against David because he is such a fighter and runs a lot, I just took my chances".

"Unfortunately the match can not have two winners and I'm so happy I won", said the relieved Spaniard, who sank to his knees at the end. "But then my game improved a little bit and I made mistakes in the last game", del Potro said. He again saved a break point before winning the set in 50 minutes.

Del Potro had the first break point of the match in Bautista's opening service game, after a rally lasting 32 shots.

"I like to play here, I feel good being here in Auckland".

Bautista Agut improved to 7-6 career in finals after going 2-0 a year ago.
