Barcelona announce new deal for long-serving defender Gerard Pique

Sergi Roberto signs new Barcelona deal to follow Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique

Having recently lost Brazilian superstar Neymar in an aggressive contract buy out by Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona have put a 500 million euros ($611 million) buy out clause in Pique's new contract.

Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique, has signed a new five-year-contract extension with the LaLiga giants.

The Catalan club confirmed the new deal on Thursday on their official website.

He first joined Barcelona as a 10-year-old in 1997 and spent time on loan at Real Zaragoza while on the books under Sir Alex Ferguson at United.

Pique developed at Barca's famed La Masia academy and has played 421 games, winning a staggering 25 trophies.

In that time he has won three Champions Leagues, six La Liga titles, five Copa del Reys, five Spanish Supercups, three European Supercups and three Club World Cups.

The Spanish worldwide centre-back has been in negotiations over a new deal since the turn of the year and a deal has now been confirmed, seeing a buyout clause included in the region of £440m.

Barcelona now top the Spanish League with nine points lead over Atletico Madrid, but are an impressive 19 points clear of fourth-placed arch-rivals Real Madrid.
