BA loses transatlantic time record to Norwegian thanks to ferocious jet stream

The flight stats that show the flight from London to New York took eight hours 23 minutes with the return to Gatwick only lasting five hours 13 minutes

One of the bulbous nose-jobbed planes belonging to the Norwegian airline fleet has broken a flight speed record previously held by British Airways, with the Norwegian 787 making the New York-to-London run in record time.

Norwegian, which operates daily flights between London and NY on its new 787 Dreamliners, allocates six and half hours for the service, meaning passengers on Monday arrived over an hour early.

Passengers on board the Norwegian Air flight reached a ground speed of up to 776mph as the plane flew from JFK airport to Gatwick.

Data from FlightRadar24.com shows the aircraft reaching 649 knots (745 mph) before it enters the oceanic flight stage, for which there is no data. It shaved 53 minutes off the expected flight duration.

The fastest transatlantic crossing of course belongs to a supersonic aircraft, when on February 7 1996 a BA Concorde flew from NY to London in just two hours 52 minutes and 59 seconds, hitting a top speed of 1,350mph.

According to data from FlightRadar, passengers left JFK at 11.44am and arrived at Gatwick at 21.57 United Kingdom time.

A Norwegian 787-9 Dreamliner has just set a new transatlantic record, all thanks to some strong tailwinds.

'When flying we record groundspeed - like a auto travelling on the ground - and airspeed due to the varying wind speeds experienced during flight.

"Therefore, our airspeed was at Mach 0.85, below Mach 1.0 needed to go supersonic and break the sound barrier", he said. Just the day before, Gatwick-based captain Pascal Niewold also recorded his fastest ever transatlantic flight - NY to London in five hours and 20 minutes.

However, the downside is that journeys going in the opposite direction may be longer as a result.

The previous record was achieved by British Airways for a 5-hour, 16-minute flight.
