Australian Open 2018 - Aljaz Bedene vs Roger Federer Preview

Roger Federer charges into second round

Well, kind of. To the delight of many tennis fans, Will Ferrell reprised his famous role on the courts of the Australian Open on Sunday.

Defending champion Roger Federer outclassed former Briton Aljaz Bedene 6-3 6-4 6-3 to reach the Australian Open second round in Melbourne.

"I think other things have changed my life in a big way and the last eight years on tour have been fantastic and I'm so fortunate that my wife is supportive of everything, that we can do it all together", Federer said.

"I knew he was going to go for his shots, it's a question of protecting your own serve as well as you can, then try to get a break". That's what happened for me a year ago.

Reports claimed six-time champion Novak Djokovic had asked to play his match with Gael Monfils in the middle of the day, in temperatures of 39 degrees, but the Serb denied that was the case in his post-match conference. The Serb has not played since Wimbledon previous year but was in good form as he beat Donald Young 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Naturally, Ferrell's surprise appearance on the court delighted many Twitter users.

"I feel like sometimes some players have gotten a little bit too robot-like".

He did not crush Bedene but one break in the first two sets and two in the third proved enough for a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win. He will next play Frenchman Gael Monfils a 6-3, 7-5 (7-5), 6-4 victor over Spanish qualifier Jaume Munar.

Konta said: "I was actually really enjoying being out there". It was sunny. It was quite a full stadium. I try to always do that. "I wanted to start with the right intensity, which I have, played ideal tennis in the first couple of sets".

"I don't feel the pressure of being world number one".

Halep, the top seed for the women, made it through qualifier Destanee Aiava in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-1.

The 36-year-old Swiss master turned the evening clash at a packed Rod Laver Arena into an exhibition, as he struck 41 winners to defeat a willing but outclassed Bedene 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
