Pullman police say officers have found Washington State University quarterback Tyler Hilinski dead in an apartment with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Tuesday.
On Tuesday afternoon, Pullman Police were sent to Hilinski's Aspen Village apartment when the WSU player did not show up to a team practice earlier in the day.
'The missing piece here is why, ' Police Chief Gary Jenkins told. He was expected to land the starting job for Washington State in the fall.
Former Washington State linebackers coach Roy Manning, who recently left for a position at UCLA, tweeted: "Words can't describe what I'm feeling right now".
A makeshift memorial for Hilinski has sprouted near Martin Stadium, and police have begun interviewing friends and people who knew him to try to determine why the 21-year-old quarterback took his own life.
'Every human life is precious, ' Leaf said, going on to add about the quarterback: 'I'm just like you & I've been here & there is hope'.

The athletic department announced that the football team was brought together Tuesday evening and informed on Hilinski's death. "The entire WSU community mourns as thoughts & prayers go out to his family". Our hearts go out to his family and friends, " interim athletic director John Johnson said. His most memorable outing came in the second week of the season when he led Washington State from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Boise State 47-44 in triple overtime.
He appeared in eight games during his sophomore season, throwing for 1,176 yards and seven touchdowns.
Hilinski was from Claremont, Calif., and went to high school at nearby Upland. He received the first start of his career in the Holiday Bowl because of an injury to Luke Falk and was 39-of-50 passing with 272 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a loss to Michigan State. Everyone who got chance to knowing him was better for it. The university also is taking steps to help grieving student-athletes with psychological services and mental health counseling.
