Army Files Official Trademark Opposition to Vegas Golden Knights Nickname

Vegas Golden Knights goalie Malcolm Subban stops a shot by the Chicago Blackhawks during the third period of an NHL hockey game Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, in Chicago.

The U.S. Army has filed a notice of opposition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office over the nickname of the Vegas Golden Knights.

The lawyer wrote that the hockey team's name and mark are "confusingly similar in sound, meaning and appearance" to its own, that the team's similar color scheme adds to the "likelihood of confusion", and that the Army would be damaged if the mark is registered because it would "falsely suggest a connection" between the Army and the hockey team.

Meanwhile, the Golden Knights have become one of the most popular teams in the league in merchandise sales.

This sentence, though, was press-release chippiness at its absolute best: "We are not aware of a single complaint from anyone attending our games that they were expecting to see the parachute team and not a professional hockey game".

Foley was dead set on incorporating Knights in the team's name and eventually settled on Golden Knights after registering additional trademarks for Silver Knights and Desert Knights.

The Vegas Golden Knights originally were to be named the Black Knights, but team owner Bill Foley has acknowledged that West Point parachute team served as an inspiration for the switch of the first-year team's nickname.

"We wanted a unique identity and Bill is very fond of West Point and the Black Knight", Mcphee said in the video.

The hockey team noted in its statement that other Golden Knights trademark owners had also coexisted with the Army without problems. You know about the classmates he had lost serving this country.

As "Exhibit F", the Army included this passage from a Post story from December 2016: "Foley, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at U.S. Military Academy, was aware of the name of the parachute team when he chose Golden Knights".

The team took issue with the Army's position. "He even tried to get the parachute team to make an appearance at last week's ceremony 'but we couldn't make it work, ' he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Tuesday".

The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York is also opposed to the filing.

Chris Creamer of SportsLogos.net reported on Wednesday that the Army filed a notice with the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office over the use of the name against Black Knight Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of the Golden Knights.

For their part, the Army's Golden Knights say they have earned 2,148 gold, 1,117 silver, and 693 bronze medals in national and worldwide competition.
