Apple Aims To Make Developers' Jobs Easier With New Startup Acquisition

As part of the acquisition, Buddybuild will be rolled into Xcode, Apple's suite of development tools for iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS, although Apple and Buddybuild have not given a specific timeline of when that will happen.

Buddybuild confirmed the acquisition in a blog post, in which it also confirmed that the buddybuild team would join Apple's Xcode engineering group "to build unbelievable developer tools for the entire iOS community".

While Buddybuild now supports both iOS and Android development, the deal with Apple means it will discontinue Android app development effective March 1.

The Xcode engineering group absorbing Buddybuild will only make the iOS environment more developer-friendly and presumably make Apple steps ahead of Google.

This deal also means an end of the Android app development that it just added in February 2017.

Buddybuild's shift towards iOS specificity should make app development for iOS devices much easier as a result. As a effect of the acquisition, Android lost support from Burstly.

During the week-long period of December 24 to December 31, 2017, Apple customers spent over $890 million on apps or purchases within apps.

Apple acquires startups all the time and its most recent acquisition is the Canadian firm, Buddybuild. Apps are a battleground for Apple, Google, and other smartphone makers.

With this acquisition, Apple has once again declared its serious intent to more than double its app revenue by 2020.

The company is made up of former employees of Amazon and has been running since 2015. As of now, the start-up offers services and products that more or less resemble Apple's TestFlight, a tool that enables app developers to share test beta app builds.

Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of the photo sharing website Flickr and workspace messaging app Slack, has served as an adviser for Buddybuild.
