American Red Cross Blood Drive January 15

Because of the winter weather in our area blood donations couldn't take place for nearly three days.

This January, National Blood Donor Month, the American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood and platelet donors of all blood types to make an appointment to give now and help address a winter blood donation shortage. The Red Cross provides about 40 percent of the nation's blood supply, and now Red Cross blood products are being distributed to hospitals as fast as donations come in.

"All blood is needed, but right now, we need negatives to come in, A negatives, B negatives, and O negatives", says Amy Perreira with the Red Cross.

The Red Cross also believes the holidays played a factor in recent low numbers. Keeping in mind that each person's donation can help three patients, that loss really adds up.

If you are eligible to donate blood, the Red Cross asks that you schedule a blood or platelet donation today by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The Red Cross encourages individuals to make a donation appointment and to complete a RapidPass online health history questionnaire to help speed up the donation process.

Donations are urgently needed from new and current donors to fully meet the needs of hospital patients in the coming days and weeks.

Type O negative: The blood type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and is what doctors reach for in trauma situations.

The Hroudas are just two examples of the many patients who depend on blood and platelet donors.

One Longmeadow resident who gave blood on Wednesday told 22News about the importance of donating this time of year.
