AMC renews 'Walking Dead' for Season 9

Lennie James as Morgan Jones isn't going anywhere anytime soon

The news comes as the USA network has renewed The Walking Dead for a ninth season, to premiere later this year.

Angela Kang, who has been with the series since 2011 and co-executive producer since 2013 has been promoted to executive producer and showrunner for the upcoming season. Given that "Fear the Walking Dead" is a prequel to its parent series, fans can expect to see a more in-depth backstory as to how the tragic story of Morgan and his son came to be.

Kang first joined the show as a story editor and later writer in Season 2, being upped to producer at the beginning of Season 3. AMC has been pretty open about its desire for The Walking Dead to run for as long as humanly possible - and then probably even after that. Though its eighth season wasn't included in our list of best shows in 2017, the show remains one of AMC's biggest cash cows and crowd pleasers. This is in comparison to the 10.58 million viewers that watched the mid-season of Season 7 in 2016, and almost half of what the equivalent episode achieved for Season 5 in 2014.

"This is an enormously important day for the entire "The Walking Dead" television universe".

Longtime writer for the show Angela Kang will take over as showrunner, making her the fourth showrunner in Walking Dead history, following Frank Darabont, Glen Mazzara, and Gimple. She has written around 20 episodes, including "Judge, Jury, Executioner", "Coda", "Still" and "The Cell".

While it isn't entirely surprising that "The Walking Dead" has been renewed for season 9, certain changes had been made behind the scenes. He was then fired and replacement with his No. 2, Scott M. Gimple for Seasons 4-8.

"I am beyond thrilled to be stepping into this new role with 'The Walking Dead.' Working on this series and having the opportunity to adapt Robert Kirkman's fantastic comic has been a fangirl dream come true for me".

Season 9 of The Walking Dead is set to premiere later in fall. Fans have also been venting their frustrations with Gimple for some time, most notably for the decision to that teased the death of a major character.
