Alabama "out" of Amazon second headquarters consideration

Alabama

Amazon Inc. rejected several CT proposals for its second headquarters, announcing Thursday the selection of 20 jurisdictions as finalists in the online retailer's closely-watched competition.

The e-commerce retailer said its second corporate headquarters would create 50,000 jobs with an average salary of $100,000, and develop 8 million square feet of office space and invest $5 billion over 15-17 years.

Speaker Corcoran is doubtful that Florida will end up as the location for the Amazon project, citing remarks by the Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Commission that the area's transportation challenges would ultimately eliminate Miami from contention.

"We're exporting all these great people when we really need to be trying to keep them here", Salomaa said last October. Miami was named one of those picked to move on to the next phase, joining cities that include Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and NY among others. "Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough - all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity", said Holly Sullivan, the head of worldwide economic development at Amazon Public Policy.

Amazon plans to make a final decision on the future of its next headquarters later this year.

MAKING THE CUT - Two Texas cities - Austin and Dallas - have made Amazon's list of 20 finalists for its second headquarters in North America.
