Afghanistan: auto bomb explodes outside Save the Children office in Jalalabad

Gunmen stormed the office of Save the Children in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad after an explosion on Wednesday morning, officials said.

Save the Children said it was suspending its operations in Afghanistan until it was safe to resume work.

The Islamic State jihadist group claimed the assault in which the gunmen used a vehicle bomb and rocket-propelled grenades.

"An attack against an organization that helps children is outrageous".

The attack started with a suicide bomber and was followed by gunfire, said Khogyani. Unconfirmed reports said at least four of the attackers were wearing police uniforms - a tactic commonly used by extremists.

Afghan security forces swarmed the area and brought the assault to an end after more than three hours, a provincial government spokesman said. Save the Children is a London-based global non-governmental organization that promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries.

The Taliban released a statement claiming responsibility.

One eyewitness named Mohammad Asif told Pajhwok Afghan News the attackers detonated there explosives before entered the building.

Anxious relatives had gathered at the scene during the gun battle between the militants and security forces.

The Taliban militants group in Afghanistan rejects the involvement of the insurgents of the group as siege continues on a non-government organization in Jalalabad city.

The Red Cross announced in October that it was drastically reducing its presence in Afghanistan after seven of its staff were killed in attacks in 2017.

"Increased violence has made operating in Afghanistan increasingly hard for many organizations".

The attack on the British charity came as the country is still reeling from an assault on an global hotel in Kabul Saturday night that left at least 22 people dead.
