A new Fable game is reportedly in the works at Playground Games

Well, the report says that the game is planned to be an open world world action RPG with a focus on character and story. According to sources close to the project, the new Fable game will be a "big-budget" affair, although unsurprisingly Microsoft is presently saying nowt on the subject.

Coming nearly two years after the closure of Lionhead Studios, it has emerged in a new report that Microsoft is looking to bring back the Fable series via a major new open-world single-player adventure. As to why Microsoft shuttered Fable creators Lionhead only to to give the IP to a new studio and greenlight a new Fable a year later, sources say the success of Horizon: Zero Dawn has something to do with it.

It's early days for this new Fable game, but it's likely we won't see anything from this title for some time to come.

A new Fable game is being developed by Forza Horizon developer, Playground Games, according to a report.

Fable co-creator Simon Carter told Eurogamer that the news left him with "mixed" feelings.

"On the other hand it is a little curious to get rid of the team that is uniquely expert in making Fable, and then try and make Fable".

Playground Games, developers of the Forza Horizon series, has been on a hiring spree since past year, snatching up developers who previously worked on big open-world games like GTA 5, and Metal Gear Solid. That game was an asymmetrical multiplayer jaunt set within the Fable universe that was surprisingly fun and I'm fortunate to have played before it disappeared into the nether.

This was quite a departure from Lionhead's previous Fable titles and the studio hoped that it would be able to return to creating single-player story-driven adventures when development of Legends was complete.

He doesn't doubt, however, that the team at Playground is "very talented" and will do a "fantastic job". It seems that Sony's PS4-exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn provided renewed interest in the open-world RPG genre for Microsoft. And Playground's efforts could very well result in Fable 4.
