2017 was a very safe year to fly

Airline travel has been getting steadily safer since 1997 statistics show

In addition, the report excludes fatalities on the ground, like the 35 people killed in Kyrgyzstan when a cargo plane sped past the runway into a neighboring village in January and the person killed by a jet blast as she stood close to the fence at the Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Maarten in July.

To70's annual Civil Aviation Safety Review takes into account only larger passenger aircraft commonly used by most travelers, or aircraft with a maximum take-off mass of 5700 kg (12566 lbs) or above.

Zero deaths were reported for passenger jet travel in 2017, making it the safest year on record for commercial aviation, according to the Dutch aviation group To70 and the Aviation Safety Network.

The fatal accident rate reduced in 2017 to 0.06 fatal accidents per million passenger flights, or a rate of one fatal accident for every 16 million passenger flights.

In 2017 there was an "extremely low" total of 10 fatal airliner accidents.

Those are substantially better odds than past year: In 2016, there were 71 civil aviation accidents of which six resulted in fatalities, killing 271 people.

Researcher Adrian Young said the low accident rate is "remarkably low" but there is no room for complacency and the rate is "a case of good fortune". "Civil aviation, whilst an industry with a very high level of safety, does still carry very large risks".

Statistics are based on all worldwide fatal commercial aircraft accidents (passenger and cargo flights) involving civil aircraft of which the basic model has been certified for carrying 14 or more passengers.

As at December 31, aviation has a record period of 398 days with no passenger jet airliner accidents.

One out of 10 aircraft involved in accidents was operated by an airline on the European Union "blacklist".

As a result the June 7 crash of a Myanmar Air Force Y-8F transport plane that killed 122 is not included.
