N Korea slams new United Nations sanctions as an 'act of war'

Next year, North Korea is expected to start to feel the pinch of worldwide and bilateral sanctions on the country's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, the ministry said.

The UN Security Council unanimously approved tough new sanctions against North Korea on Friday in response to its latest launch of a ballistic missile that Pyongyang says can reach anywhere on the USA mainland.

The sanctions also order the repatriation of North Korean workers sent overseas to earn much needed revenue for Kim Jong-Un's regime.

Almost a month before Tuesday's announcement, North Korea tested a new ICBM, the Hwasong-15, in violation of worldwide law.

"And should the North Korean regime conduct another nuclear or ballistic missile test, this resolution commits the Security Council to take even further action". "North Korea is forecast to maximize efforts to endure (the impact of sanctions) by tightening social control and mobilizing its people for building the economy", the ministry said, according to Yonhap. China's ambassador warned against "tough posturing and confrontation".

"We believe maximum pressure today is the best antidote to the risk of war", Francois Delattre, France's ambassador to the United Nations, told reporters on his way in to the Security Council chambers.

Data released by China on Saturday showed that its trade with North Korea edged up to $388 million in November but remained around its lowest levels this year.

Ambassador Park Chull-joo, participating as an observer since South Korea is not now a member of the Security Council, said, "However narrow and bumpy it may be, the road toward peaceful denuclearization through dialogue is still open and available".

North Korea has said it is a "pipe dream" for the United States to think it will give up its nuclear weapons.

North Korea on Sunday rejected the resolution, calling it an act of war. The threat from Pyongyang has come under increased focus in 2017, as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over significant advancements in the country's long-range missile and nuclear weapons program.

To be prohibited similarly are exports to North Korea of industrial equipment, machinery, transportation vehicles and industrial metals.

North Korea said Sunday that the U.S. should give up its "pipe dream" that it will stop producing nuclear weapons, in a statement released by the foreign ministry on Sunday.

But the significance of mentioning of inter-Korean cooperation, especially with regards to both countries' armed forces, may be more political than military, Delury noted.
